A Rough Guide to the Many Shades of Erotica for Women: Kate Gould Talks Smut

- Kate Gould

I think I have a pretty good idea of what turns women on. I spend quite a lot of time writing about sex – a lot more time than I spend having it which could be ironic, I suppose, but really it’s just irritating. I read about sex, I watch porn made by and for women (Erika Lust and Petra Joy are fabulous if you need any suggestions), and I talk about sex with all sorts of people: ones putting together sex education courses for schools, others who work in the sex industry, and some unfortunates sat next to me in the pub hopefully more drunk than I am. You get the idea: I think I know what I’m talking about.

Then wan little Anastasia and dull as dishwater Christian appeared and sat on the bestseller lists for months. Refusing to believe that their pallid tale could possibly fulfil every woman’s erotic dreams, even if they did sell boatloads of copies, I decided to write about the erotica out there in the world that isn’t 50 Shades. I was prepared to be wrong and admit that, no, I don’t know the first thing about female sexual desire and what lights its fire: Christian is the man every woman longs for in the wildest reaches of her erotic imaginings and Anastasia is who she wants to be.

I can’t claim to have come up with a definitive list covering every female desire imaginable – as a friend reminded me the other day, “if it exists, there’s porn in it” – but I’ve done my best to cover, at least, some of the gargantuan range of fantasies out there in the world of women’s imaginations. The ones, in print, anyway. You may have many more to turn you on.

I’ll start with my favourite: Bestial Smut. This isn’t the same as bestiality, I hasten to add. It’s about being wild, part animal, and having sex that is fuelled by instinct and lust. There is no mention of full, high breasts, slim figures, gorgeous blonde locks or shaven pussies. The women don’t care about such chick lit concerns – they might even have a “hairy mound”. What they do care about is pleasure and passion. A woman, part wolf and on heat, will choose her mate according to his ability to satisfy her; there’s no small talk, no pretence, no wondering endlessly if he likes her/finds her attractive, and she’s not looking for Mr Right. There’s no need to describe her as “feisty” or “independent” because she just is – as a woman who can turn into a wolf at will and bite anyone who pisses her off, there’s no way she wouldn’t be feisty and independent. Though the woman may sometimes falter, her wolf side will make sure she always knows her rightful place and her worth. And, of course, there’s the thrill of bedding the Alpha Male. All very dramatic.

Recommended reads: Kamikaze and Wild Card by Moira Rogers.

Daddy’s Naughty Girl Smut. It’s hard to find family smut – or “pseudo-incest”, as it’s known, because the characters aren’t usually blood-relatives – that isn’t just a collection of tropes. Personally, I find the scheming stepdaughters and horny stepfathers a bit boring, but if the number of titles is anything to go by, it’s a popular genre. I don’t mean to diss all sort-of incestuous fantasies just because they don’t do anything for me, but there’s so little originality, the same stories are told over and over again. Daddy’s little cum slut is the staple character who, enamoured of her burgeoning sexuality, pert breasts, and shaved vagina, sets about seducing her stepfather by adopting what she considers sexy poses while wearing very little. Sometimes the stepfather has a fleeting thought of responsibility, but it soon passes and next thing he’s thrusting his huge, thick cock into his stepdaughter’s mouth, pussy and anus, just like she wants him to. She makes a lot of encouraging noises and says things like “Oh yes daddy”, “I’m your little cum slut”, and “Give it to me daddy”. But, just because it isn’t my thing, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t love it, obviously.

If fired-up little femmes making their stepfathers lose all control of their dicks is your thing, here are some recommended reads. Going Down on Daddy by Raquel Rogue, Daddy’s Watching by Katie Cramer, Daddy’s Naughty Girl by Audri London, Daddy’s Little Doll by Lola Swain, Daddy Likes to Spank! by Lea Fox can be found in The Big Book of Smut; Step Dad Likes to Watch by Belle Hart and Daddy Eats Candy are in The Big Book of Smut Two. It’s not very well written, but The Ghost Cums by Rosalind Betancourt is an unusual take on the incest theme involving ghostly possession, obsessive love, and the paranormal.

Breeder Smut. The most common scenario in breeder smut is the kidnap and forced insemination of a woman who starts out being terrified then realises she actually really enjoys being treated this way. By the time she’s borne her captor’s fruit, she’s fallen in love with him, forgotten all about trying to escape, and longs for nothing more than for him to impregnate her again. It’s sort of a maternal twist on the fantasy of being taken against your will then discovering that you like it – maybe even can’t get enough of it.

It’s quite chick litty at the start, but I’d recommend Taken by the Monsters: An Erotic Monster Tale by K. J. Burkhardt as a sexy take on this theme. The protagonist is horrified then turned on by monsters lurking in an abandoned building who introduce her to the wildness of hairy monster sex.

Following on from the maternal theme, is Lactation Smut. I’d read about men with a nappy fetish who liked to be dressed up and treated like babies, but I’d never come across anyone getting turned on by being breastfed. It ranges from men who sit in their wives’ lap like a baby to those who, while having sex with pregnant and breastfeeding women, discover they love the taste of breast milk and the women love having their nipples sucked by a man. I suppose it makes a change from it being a baby. I’ve never lactated and ┬áthe last time I was anywhere near breast milk, I was a few months old and being breastfed by my mum, so I don’t get the sexual appeal of either feeding or being fed, but it’s something to think about if you’re in need of a new fantasy or to indulge in if you happen to be lactating.

Recommended reading: Pregnant and Milking It! by Macy Alexander in her collection, 58 Almost Free Sex Stories, is a short piece to start you off if you’re not sure whether you’d enjoy lactation smut. If you’re after something longer, there’s Milking Sex Stories: 20 Hot Lactation Erotica Tales by Lucia Minx, Maggie the Milked Maid by Nicky Raven, Lactating Mommy Stories! by Toni Taboo, and Eight Maids A Milking by Lola Swain.

Doctor Smut. Gorgeous doctors are few and far between. I had a dalliance or two with medical professionals, in my fairly well spent youth, but they weren’t half as exotic or irregular-heartbeat-inducing as the ones I’ve been reading about lately. I’ve known enough bad doctors (as in incompetent – not naughty, unfortunately) to dull the appeal of the whole white coat thing, but there is something about a man who knows what he’s doing and, for the five minute duration of the appointment, gives his undivided attention. That’s enough for a spark or a mild swoon, but if it’s excitement you want, there’s got to be that glint in the eye. A textbook knowledge of the workings of your reproductive organs isn’t enough: expert ministrations are one thing, but to moisten your knickers, he has to know how to make them work work, if you see what I mean.

There are many stories about doctor/patient sex, most of which have a rough sex/forced penetration/gangbang/rape fantasy/humiliation theme. If that’s what you fancy, the Doctor BDSM collection by Dominique Roux, Fiona Foxx, and Amber Essing; Doctor/Patient Sex Encounters and Thorough Examination: Double Teamed by my Doctors by Nancy Brockton; and Doctor’s Pretty Pet by Suzie Cox are all steamy tales.

My favourites were Visit To The Doctor and Visit To The Doctor Volume Two by Barbra Novac. After a friend recommends him, the unnamed protagonist goes to see a doctor who fires up her libido in a way she’s never known before. There’s no forced sex – though she is initially surprised by his unorthodox approach – and the focus is on her pleasure as the doctor teaches her a thing or two about her body and all the fun she can have with it, and she delights in her sexual desire. The books are also well-written and, though the situation has been written about many times, they are pretty much trope-free.

BDSM Smut. Since Ms Steele and Mr Grey appeared, bondage sex toys sales have increased 400% in the UK and BDSM is being talked about as though no one had ever thought of it before Ana and Chris gave it a shot. In the real world, according to wikipedia (so it must be true), during the ninth century BC, ritual flagellations were carried out in Sparta, sixth century BC drawings depicting two men giving a woman a good spanking were found in an Etruscan burial site, and the Kama Sutra contains references to both sadomasochism and safe words. Along with Leather Pride and a plethora of porn, I think it’s safe to say that BDSM has been around a while and wasn’t invented by James on a fanfiction site a few months ago.

On to some books. If you’re looking for a sort of how-to guide, Tristan Taormino’s The Ultimate Guide to Kink: BDSM, Role Play and the Erotic Edge is an interesting mix of instructions and essays by kink educators and practitioners.

For fiction, I’d recommend Red Phoenix’s Brie series about a woman who decides to go to evening classes at the Submissive Training Center. It’s an exciting and witty exploration of BDSM without the emotional abuse of Grey and Steele’s relationship. If you’re in the mood to see the roles reversed, Given to Miss Tate by Charlotte Benning is a tale of femdom and malesub.

Lesbian Smut. This genre tends to be written for two audiences: men who like the idea of a couple of women playing at being lesbians but really being into them, and women who want to read about other women having sex. The former tend to contain a lot of babysitters and teenagers having their first lesbian experience, usually with each other. The latter usually has more range.

If you’re not sure what you fancy, Barbara Cardy’s The Mammoth Book of Lesbian Erotica and Victoria Andersen’s Lesbian Sex: 10 Steamy Stories of Lesbian Lust have a medley of scenarios. Lexie X pretty much covers the entire first lesbian encounter genre. I’ve become a fan of Kit Lix and her Lesbian Boi Tales: they’re raunchy but aren’t focused solely on sex, and they’re imaginative, well-written and, unlike many books in the genre, don’t just repeat the same sexual scenarios.

Rough Smut. Sometimes you want candles and romance; others you want to be taken roughly from behind in the woodshed. I do, anyway. Tales of rough sex usually have an element of rape and/or BDSM. From the ones I’ve read, it’s more of a fantasy rape – having rough sex with someone you want to have sex with rather than actually being raped. (I’m trying not to veer off into Todd Akinland by deciding what is and isn’t rape.) Some books give a backstory of abuse to this desire, depicting the character as a woman who wants to repeat the abuse she suffered during childhood. Others are about women who just want the proverbial bit of rough because it turns them on.

If you’re looking for degradation, Leonna Black’s Rough Sex: An Explicit Fantasy is an intense BDSM tale. Fortunately it’s a short story rather than a novel because I’m not sure the protagonist could have survived many more pages of abuse. I’d recommend Some Like It Rough – it’s a collection of inventive, original, and steamy tales.

Collections. If you’re not sure what you fancy, these collections provide a variety of tales that are likely to range from lighting your fire to putting you off sex altogether.
