A Pox on the Patriarchy

Porn is only damaging when it’s not Murdoch’s porn

Today our esteemed PM, the right honourable David Cameron, announced that from henceforth, ISPs will have to block all online pornography – and consumers will have to take practical steps to exercise their inalienable right to watch other people fuck, by “opting-in”. And up and down the land, the feminists they cheered,no-more-Page-three yea, they anointed Cameron with balm and placed a crown of roses upon his shiny, red face. For Cameron had revealed himself as a champion of women, and protector of the innocence of children.

Except, not so much.

You see, beyond the fact that far wiser heads than I have expressed grave doubts about the efficacy of the plans, Cameron is only concerned about “corroding childhood” when it suits him – or to be precise, when it doesn’t bother Rupert Murdoch.

Yes, reader, I am talking about Page 3. Page 3, which our very adult PM sniggered about when discussing the issue in Parliament. Page 3, which Cameron has told readers to “turn the page” on. Page 3, which Cameron sees as a “consumer choice”.

But Cameron, what about the corroded childhood of the girl who walked down the corridor at school while boys rated her and her friends out of 10, while holding up page 3? What about the corroded childhood of young girls who grow up in a world where clothed men do things and naked women are things? What about the corroded life of the woman who was raped while a man told her she was beautiful and should be on page 3? What about them Cameron? Don’t they matter?

Put briefly, no they don’t. It doesn’t matter that young girls grow up in a world where the most widely circulated newspaper advocates a racist conception of beauty. It doesn’t matter that young girls grow up in a world where the “get your tits out” chanting starts as young as eleven – and who knows, maybe younger. It doesn’t matter that young girls grow up in a world where on the day Jessica Ennis won a sodding gold medal for her country, the largest image of a woman in The Sun was of a woman with her boobs out, pictured for the gratification of men, with a snarky little box next to her mocking her ability to think for herself.

None of this matters, because Rupert Murdoch says it doesn’t matter. And what Rupert Murdoch says goes in this so-called democracy.

In this country we live in, internet porn corrodes childhood; Rupert Murdoch porn, arguably far more damaging in terms of its widespread reach and context, is a consumer fucking choice.

Page 3 isn’t porn. I doubt that you will be able to refute my assertion.

No you’re right, your dazzling argument has totally stymied me. Have a donut.

What argument lies behind your assertion thomas? Why is the woman pictured without clothes on? Id like to hear your rationale for why it is necessary for her to be interviewed and her opinion featured with her naked?

I have just moved my 6 yr old daughter from school for 4 months of sexist bullying by 6 boys in her class including a sexual assault. The headmaster and teachers defended the boys saying it was just rough play and stigmatised my daughter by putting her in a special needs therapy group. What is special needs about not wanting to go into school to be punched and kicked on a daily basis with boys shouting out in the playground that ‘boys are better than girls’. How about whites are better than blacks? Recognise the attitude? What Dave Cameron knows about sexist violence and intimidation you could stick on a postage stamp, which is why 1 in 3 UK schoolgirls is subject to sexist violence and intimidation at school, from their male peers. Porn teaches girls they are wh*res and b*tches who lie about rape and spend most of their time wiggling about desperate to have a knob or two inside one of their orifices. It teaches boys that girls are animals with no minds and no rights. No wonder we have so much sexist violence in the home. Porn is a toxic media that eroticises gender hate and is nothing more than anti equality propoganda and what Dave Cameron knows about the human rights of half the population he is meant to be representing you could stick on an even smaller postage stamp.

fantastic article caroline, couldn’t agree more with your sentiments. This ‘war on online porn’ is pure politics from DC, as is clearly shown on his R4 woman’s hour interview and again in this article. page 3 is on every train, every day, available to be picked up by any child at any point. And it would make much more sense to teach parents how to read the DNS record on the modem to monitor online activity, rather than put blunt firewalls in place imho. but that’s not going to make any headlines, so bravo to you for bringing his headline into fullest context!!!

  4. As I tweeted to someone last night, I’ve got no filters, and have never seen porn on the internet; I only see it over people’s shoulders in the Sun and on the shelves in newsagents and supermarkets.

Great article. Thank you for expressing your thoughts so powerfully. I often see images, videos and hear things are detrimental to girls. I don’t think there have bee enough studies showing to the negative impact this has on our societies. These damaged girls grow up to be women plagued with dysfunction and pain. Many women themselves don’t realize they are more than there breasts and thighs.

I think this is very important and something DC needs to address properly and once and for all!
